Effect of Family Support and Self-Esteem on Cancer Patient¡¯s Feeling of Powerlessness

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine factors related to the feeling of powerlessness of hospitalized cancer patients. Methods: Study subjects were 150 persons wi¼ö cancer who resided in a hospital. Instruments were the Family Support Scale (5-point, 11-item), Self- Esteem Scale (4-point, 10-item) and Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (4-point, 8-item). Data were collected from July to August 2010, using the structured questionnaires. The SPSS Win version 15.0 was used for descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson`s correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression. Results: Mean scores of family support, self-esteem and powerlessness were 43.40, 27.04 and 16.52, respectively. Powerlessness was negatively correlated with family support and self-esteem. Family support and self-esteem were significant predictors of powerlessness. Conclusion: Hospitalized cancer patients benefit from greater family-support and higher self-esteem in the relief of the feeling of powerlessness.
